Produced?
Mining industry uses scandium oxide as the primary form of scanningdium refining. While scandium-rich minerals such as thorium sandi (Sc)2(Si2O7) or Kolbeckite SPO4*2H2O may be rare, trace amounts of it can still be found in many minerals. Scandium oxide is most often produced from the byproducts of extraction of other elements.

Applications in alloys
Scandium and aluminum make up the majority of this alloy. The scandium-alluminum alloy is currently used in small quantities, has high density, good strength, toughness, plasticity and corrosion resistance.
Use of electric light source materials
A new generation of electric light sources is created after pure SC2O3 has been converted into SCI3/NAI. It is used to make a scandium/sodium light source lamp.
Application of laser materials
Gadolinium gadolinium scandium garnet is made from pure SC2O3 (>= 99.9%) and Gd3SC2Ga3O12. This third generation of laser emission power has a 3.0x increase in power. For a single crystal preparation, the charge for each one is three kilograms five kg, while the SC2O3 >= 99.9% raw material is around 1.0 kg.
Application in electronic materials
The oxidizing agent for the color TV picture tube cathode gun is pure SC2O3. It can also be used with great effect as pure SC2O3. An oxide layer 1mm thick of Ba, Sr and Ca is spray on the top of the color tube cathode. A thin layer of SC2O3 is then dispersed onto it. Because of the Mg, Sr, and Ba reaction, oxide layer cathode can promote the reduction in Ba. The released electrons are active and emit large current electrons. Thus, the fluorescence-body luminescence is 4x brighter than the one without SC2O3. This increases the current density, makes the TV picture more clear, and the cathode lifetime can increase by 3x. For each 21 inch imaging cathode, the SC2O3 content is 0.01mg.
