What is Magnesium-Nitride?
Magnesium Nitride, is an inorganic molecule with the chemical formula Mg3N2. It's particulate matter that is part of the quantum system of cubic crystals. At ambient temperature, magnesium nutridide is yellow-green, but magnesium nitride containing a portion of magnesium oxide impurities can be grayish white.
The Molar mass of magnesium nutride is 100.95g/mol. Its density is 2.712g/cm3. Magnesium nitride is completely dissolved in water and acid however, it is partially dissolvable in both ethanol and ether.
The melting temperature of magnesium nitride is 1500 degrees. Magnesium Nitride, just like many metal nitrides water to create ammonia. It is frequently used as a catalyst. It reacts with acid or nonmetallic oxides , forming ammonium salts as well as magnesium salts.
Magnesium nitride , a type of ceramic, is found in nature. Magnesium has excellent corrosion resistance, and significantly improves productivity. Magnesium has high thermal conductivity as well being high corrosion resistance as well as resistance to temperature. Magnesium nitride has another great importance due to its usage as a catalyst for creation of boron nitrogen.
What is Magnesium Nitride Used For?
1. As a catalyst, it is used to make the nitride out of other elements that have high hardness and high thermal conductivity. It also provides corrosion resistance, wear resistance, and higher temperature resistance. The first successful process of synthesis of cubic bore nitride, this catalyst is magnesium Nitride.
2. Useful for high strength steel for smelting. Magnesium Nitride (Mg3N2) is a substitute for desulphurized magnesium in construction Smelting, which can help to improve the density, strength as well as the bearing force of steel. Additionally, the use of magnesium nitride (Mg3N2) desulfurization, may reduce the quantity of other components, thereby helping lower the cost of manufacturing construction steel.
3. It is used to prepare special ceramic materials;
4. For the manufacture of special alloy foaming agent;
5. Special glass is made for the purpose of manufacturing;
6. Catalytic polymer crosslinking
7. For the recycling of nuclear waste
How to Make Magnesium Nitride?
The main preparation methods of magnesium nitride comprises direct reaction method of magnesium powder with nitrogen, method of reaction of magnesium with nitrogen using nitrogen plasma flow using a magnesium coil blast method in nitrogen atmosphere the low pressure chemical gas as a complementary product method, self propagating high temperature synthesis method, nano magnesium Nitride synthesis method for example.
Recently, G. Soto et al. created amorphous magnesium nitride film with different Mg:N ratios on Si substrates within a molecular-nitrogen environment using the use of pulse-laser deposition. These techniques restrict the production of industrial magnesium nitride due to the cost of production, lengthy process or complex equipment operation or the poor yield of magnesium oxide.
Although the direct reaction between magnesium powder with nitrogen has commercial value, the manufacture of magnesium nitride powder needs higher temperatures for reaction and a longer response time. In addition, the particle's shape is not perfect and easy to aggregate, which does not meet specifications of industrial quality. NH3 can be decomposed into Nbreaking bonds faster than N2 and H2 decomposed may interfere with the formation process of MgO. This is why ammonia can be used as the nitrogen source. Chen Faqin et al. used liquid ammonia as nitrogen source for the preparation of magnesium nitride using direct nutriding of magnesium. The following conclusions can be drawn: Using thermodynamic study, liquid ammonia might react with magnesium powder more easily than nitrogen in the preparation of magnesium nitride; High quality magnesium nitride, with good purity and uniform particles is prepared by heating to 600 degrees Celsius and in ammonia-based atmosphere for 1 hour. Then, it's heated to 800degrees, with an ammonia flow rate of 500ml/min and one hour of nitriding.
